Upon arriving at the Houma House we were immediately impressed with the gardens and everything that the Houmas House had to offer. During the 2020 Travel South Conference in Baton Rouge, I attended a private party at Houmas House Plantation. Houmas House, located in Darrow, Louisiana, graciously hosted us and provided an authentic Southern experience.

In 1829, General Wade Hampton began the task of enlarging the Donaldson Cottage and transforming it into the Classical Revival Mansion that stands today. For over 240 years, the Houmas Mansion has evolved and grew with the times and with the owners of the great mansion. The great colonnade has not changed since 1829, when General Hampton set out to build a mansion fitting for his wife, Mary Cantey Hampton.
Step Back In Time At This Haunted Louisiana Plantation
Plantations in Louisiana are one of the most sought after attractions throughout the state. Located between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, The Houmas House Estate allows visitors to experience the life on a sugarcane plantation in the 1800’s. The mansion has been restored to the antebellum era, reflecting the opulence and wealth this sugarcane farm boasted in the 1880’s. The guided mansion tour walks through the 250 year history, showing the architectural evolution of this manor house and how it became a grand estate. Rare and period artwork and artifacts are displayed and used to explain plantation life.

The food was delicious, they offer a mix of New Orleans style food, seafood and more. Some of our favorite parts were the oriental gardens and the sculptures gardens. Guests were delighted by the delectable charcuterie spreads and a wide selection of Cajun/creole favorites. There bodies were never recovered from the mighty Mississippi. The Live Oaks in front of Houmas House are beautiful and majestic. Back then it went almost to the river and there was no levee of course. Soon after the death of Wade Hampton II on February 10th, 1858, John Smith Preston decided to sell the Houmas Plantation.

Mr. Kelly allows tours of the mansion and gardens, however the Houmas remains his private residence, as it was for its previous owners for over 240 years. We sure did enjoy our visit and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys historic homes, architecture and gardens. He collected great furnishings and great works of art to appoint both his city estate, later named “Burnside Place”, and his country estate, “The Houmas”. He shared his time between the two grand properties and entertained lavishly. At the age of 71, John Burnside, feeling ill, traveled to White Sulpher Springs, West Virginia for what he hoped would be a restful recovery. Mr. Burnside left one of the largest estates in America to his boyhood friend, Oliver Beirne. With its historic mansion, enchanting gardens, educational museum, delightful dining options, and even the opportunity to stay overnight, it’s a destination that caters to a wide range of interests. The Carriage House offers fine dining on the property in a beautiful room filled with historical artifacts and decor.
Shortly afterwards The Houmas was purchased by Daniel Clark, who began to develop the property and built one of the first sugar mills along this stretch of the river. In June 1807, Clark and territorial Governor William C. C. Claiborne fought a duel on the property, in which Claiborne sustained a gunshot wound to his leg. In 1940, the Miles family sold the Houmas to Dr. George Crozat. Dr. George Crozat engaged architect, Douglass Freret, to remodel and redesign the Classic Revival Mansion into a Williamsburg federal-style country home. The house was stripped of its belvedere railings and cupola ornaments, along with the decorative ornate entablature over the columns as well as removing the second floor rear bedroom wing. Numerous out buildings, located just behind the main house, were demolished.
Each room includes a large flat screen TV, Wifi, coffee and tea makers, and an iron to name a few. Tickets to tour the Houmas Estate and The Great River Road Museum can be purchased upon arrival. On April 15th, 1858, the Houmas Plantations were sold to John Burnside, of the firm of J. All the buildings are really authentic to the time period portrayed. It’s a very unique looking museum, so I’m sure it would be full of historical memorabilia and facts. We loved the food and the variety of options they offered. Nestled amidst the lush landscapes of Louisiana, the Houmas House Plantation stands as a testament to the region’s rich history and grandeur. This beautiful and spacious two room suite features a King size four poster bed in a private bedroom with a separate living room with a sofa sleeper.
